The things you can find on YouTube!

Some say this was Prog's darkest hour - typifing the pompousness and self-indulgence of some prog acts.
But Wakeman was a great showman, and is a very talented musician.

Watch out for the triple neck guitar - you don't see many of those these days!

Loads of great Wakeman anecdotes arose from those preposterous shows. IIRC, there was one occasion where King Arthur couldn't find Mordred in all the dry ice 'smoke', and ended up having to kill himself.

I've got, I dunno, about 50 Wakeman albums? But it's notable how much he depends on and recycles the material from the first 3 albums (Six Wives, Arthur, Journey). Though I'd take his Criminal Record over any of 'em - or the original recording of Country Airs, piano solos. I'm talking to myself here, aren't I? :dopey:

No, I'm sure someone else will own up to having A Criminal Record ;)
I only have Six Wives and Arthur in my collection, perhaps I should try some later stuff.

Thanks for the thread everyone! It put in the mind to listen to a bit of "Yessongs".

Wakeman's a mixed bag, Paul: a lot of crud in there! Among my faves are the aforementioned Criminal Record and Country Airs (this version, not that one), as well as 1984, Cost Of Living (lively throughout, but his setting of Gray's Elegy with Robert Powell narrating is superb), A Suite Of Gods, 2000 AD Into The Future (contender for Worst Title Of All Time) and - The Gospels! (But this version that you can't get hold of, not that one, which I think is more god-bothery.)

That selection goes from new-agey to operatic to rock (often with ropey lyrics). He also reworked some of his well-known tunes for piano on The Classical Connection; that's a good one.

EDIT: Just remembered Hummingbird, which is Wakeman with Dave Cousins of The Strawbs. Very nice album.

His sons Adam and Oliver also play keyboards (last time I saw Adam he was playing with the Strawbs, whilst Oliver was in Yes!). Of their bits and pieces, I recommend (only) Adam's Real World Trilogy, a very melodic set of ambient tunes.

Very nice Genesis there, Callan. Another band I've never dared get into, for fear of buying the entire back catalogue... :shifty:

I'm very much a Gabriel/Hackett era man when it comes to Genesis.

Seen both of them 'solo' many times over the years.

Gabriel

Gabriel with his daughter Melanie (this was fantastic to see live at Wembley)

Hackett

He still does a few bits from his Genesis days

Gabriel live is among the best experiences life has to offer. Especially when he closes with In Your Eyes. *Sigh*

(Of course, I do speak from a very sheltered existence... :shifty:)

@ Paul: Yep, I, too, like the Gabriel/Hackett era more than what Genesis did later. And Hackett's and Gabriel's solo careers are more impressive than Collins's, imo...

What tosh! :pissed:

There is no such thing as too pompous or overtly self-indulgent prog act!

That said, good ol' Rick's got himself a bit of Zappa syndrome: he things everything, but everything, he can commit to disc is also worth committing to disc.

Anyway, I'll see your Wakeman and rise you with a Vangelis, as back in the days of proto-prog:

And here's a movement from his Heaven And Hell which stradled the gap between new age/electronica and prog:

And on the subject of post rock, here's another Finnish spam -- Magyar Posse in Whirlpool Of Terror And Tension:
