World Music

#1  Postby THWOTH » Jun 12, 2011 1:23 am

It might be a bit of a meaningless term, a catchall genre, but this thread is for traditional and indigenous musics from outside the western tradition - though not exclusively of course. Whatever... :dunno:

I'll inaugurate the thread with the sublimely intoxicating, and intoxicated, Taraf de Haïdouks.

Dao Dezi - A Breton band that merged the celtic with electronic long before the likes of Afro-Celt Sound System or any others came along.

My fav' track off their World Mix Album, which i bought by chance in a charity shop years ago.

Those bargain-bucket finds are often the sweetest. :D I like :this:, reminds me of Jah Wobble in places. I'm definitely going to check them out.

This Bretonesque Celticification is by Anglo-French honkers Blowzabella. I used to have these guys on a cassette tape I brought at a gig - but it went the way of such things, being chewed up by the car stereo one day :(

Cop the heavy-metal hurdy-gurdy playing!

That was me. :D If you like it you might want to check out the film Genghis Blues, a documentary about blind US Blues singer Paul Pena's trip to Tuva to take part in their national singing competition.

A Nordic triple whammy!

Hedningarna (Swedish/Finnish)

Garmarna (Swedish)

Alamaailman Vasarat (Finnish)

Couldn't find the studio version of this, which is mindbogglingly good, and would have been nice for showcasing the sound but they do a fair job of it live.
