Ratskep on Atheism+

#1  Postby HomerJay » Aug 24, 2012 12:18 am

Let me introduce you to Atheism+, the nascent movement that might be the most exciting thing to hit the world of unbelief since Richard Dawkins teamed up with Christopher Hitchens to tell the world that God was a Delusion and, worse than that, Not Great.

Less than a week old in its current form, Atheism+ is the brainchild of Jen McCreight, a Seattle-based biology postgrad and blogger at the secularist Freethought network. She has called for a "new wave" of atheism on that "cares about how religion affects everyone and that applies skepticism to everything, including social issues like sexism, racism, politics, poverty, and crime."

On one level, this is just the logical culmination of the huge upsurge in interest prompted by the so-called "New Atheists" and the growth over the last few years of a recognisable community or movement based around ideas of atheism, scientific scepticism and a progressive political agenda. While atheism is, by definition, no more or less than a non-belief in God, in practice it clusters with a variety of other positions, from pro-choice to campaigns against homeopathy. People who espouse "liberal atheism" as it might be called, oppose religion for political as well as philosophical reasons, just as the forces of religion seem to line up - though of course not exclusively - behind seemingly unconnected issues such as opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage and, in the US, gun-control.

I forget where - I think it may have been on Ratz - someone made a good case for this article probably being a plant.

Awesome. The comments on the site are great too.

I would be interested to hear the case made for why this article is "probably a plant", especially considering the rift that has arisen in "the atheist community" (if there is such a thing) regarding what is seen by some as misogynistic tendencies among the ranks. There are no fewer than 4 threads addressing the issue here on RatSkep.

Are those threads plants too?

Most likely... In fact, I bet Watson is a closet theist who only started the whole thing to cause a rift in the atheist community.

Not so much a rift as a splinter. ;)

PS. This is now a duplicate of the discussion taking place in the Atheism and Feminism thread.

PPS. A nice tweet by Steve Zara that sums up my view nicely:

I think I'll become a theist. Lion and Amkerman, God me up. Come on, let's God!

Even if we assume there is misogyny throbbing through the ranks of atheism, it still wouldn't get close to the misogyny of theism. It's not even in the same league.

It's not misogyny if God tells you to do it

Just as much of a rift as was caused by the "Bright movement".

You see, you still don't understand something very fundamental. The ONLY commonality amongst all atheists is not believing in a god. There is no dogma, there are no tenets, there are no rules. There is nothing on which to base a schism.

You keep trying to shoehorn atheism into the religious mold, but it just doesn't work.

There's a group of atheists trying to advance this "atheism +" concept. So what? They aren't saying that they represent atheism, they are saying that they are atheists plus this other stuff. It matters no more than if there was a group calling themselves atheist Red Wings fans.
Atheism alone is no more a religion than health is a disease. One may as well argue over which brand of car pedestrians drive.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does the "MSM" in the thread title refer to?
