Major Discovery

'Smoking Gun' for Universe's Incredible Big Bang Expansion Found
Astronomers have found the first direct evidence of cosmic inflation, the theorized dramatic expansion of the universe that put the "bang" in the Big Bang 13.8 billion years ago, new research suggests.

If it holds up, the landmark discovery — which also confirms the existence of hypothesized ripples in space-time known as gravitational waves — would give researchers a much better understanding of the Big Bang and its immediate aftermath.

There could be a Nobel for Guth in this if the result is confirmed. What a spectacular result! It certainly narrows the field with regard to cosmological models.

Whatever it is, all of the materialist physicist types had better calm the fuck down until the philosophers explain why it is completely insignificant in the search for reality, which only they are equipped to lead.

Meanwhile the Koranic Physics Institute is working on explaining how it was predicted 1400 years ago in a verse that was until now assumed to refer to camel husbandry.

One thing that will be interesting is how this matches up to Turok and Steinhardt's model with regard to the energy distribution of these waves, as there's potential for falsification. This will be the first falsification of a prediction arising from M-Theory. I'll have to scour the original papers again when I have moment and look at how it measures up.

Probably not. While this result offers support for inflation, it's not a slam dunk. The existence of the inflaton field, let alone its properties, remains a hypothesis. In fact, the entire mechanism of inflation is based on a hybrid theoretical construction of quantum field theory and general relativity.
But it will be interesting to see which constraints these results can put on the countless versions of inflation that have been concocted. For example, there is some tension with indirect results from Planck, which hints at a non-constant scalar spectral index.

The breathtakingly ignorant and downright hateful comments I just read on Spiegel online are pretty disturbing. The demand that it has to be "useful", preferably immediately, is one of the more benign views.

Apparently inflation would prove the existence of the multiverse. How much longer before confirmation hack ?
You said two and a half hours but that was over five hours ago now ha ha. Why do monumanrtal decisions take
so long to announce ? These ones only come about once in a lifetime so I hope to God it is true because by the
time of the next one I shall probably be ash [ I am going to be cremated ]

I don't think it's quite that simple.

The announcement's been made. They have a sigma 5 result, but that result has to be confirmed by others before they can call it a confirmed discovery. The Planck satellite results should sort it out.

No audience makes Kalamity Kraig shut up ;) but asking about usefulness of such discovery, or rather confirmation of prediction, is like asking about usefulness of asking about usefulness.
