Indeed, some rational perspective is required. If we'd had a rational Government, like NZ or Mongolia, we'd have followed the WHO pandemic playbook, locked the nation down properly and instituted quarantine at the borders on Feb 2020. Got the virus under control, then gone on with our lives. But, that would interfere with Tory financial interests too much, plus too many Tory MPs thought any attempt to the control the virus was "over-reactionary nonsense" so well versed in science were they.
Instead, because the Tories are in charge all that has happened is just enough, barely enough, to prevent the NHS being overloaded and bodies piling up in the streets as per Italy. Bodies in the streets are something all but, the most frothingly insane Tory, can't ignore. So that bad press has been avoided. Yay.
Meanwhile people have been subjected to penury due to successive half-assed lockdowns because the Government of 6th or 7th largest economy on earth won't actually support its populace properly.
The virus has yet to run its course and will, if the H1N1 influenza A pandemic of 1918 is anything to go by, will be around for years before it becomes endemic in the population. Because too many Governments dropped the fucking ball on this. And the current iteration of the virus still kills people. It is anything but, mild. There's no guarantee that the next inevitable variant will be less troublesome.
Its so sad that here, in the 21st century, we have Governments that still fail to care for their population by a huge margin and that some of said population thinks trying to take modest precuations to care for each other are, in some way, "over-reactionary nonsense."
