That is a great film, no doubt. Perhaps surprisingly, though, the George Clooney one comes closer to the original Stanislaw Lem novel. Lem did not like Tarkovsky's version.

Of course, Lem's novel is greater, more profound, and more deeply strange than either of them. By a long shot. Read it. Now. (What are you still doing here?)

Edited to add: and great as it is, Solaris isn't even Lem's best book. Try Fiasco if you want to read something - In the truest sense of that overused word - awesome. It made a very deep impression on me, and I'm not the only one. Towering.

Had Split Second on vhs, I liked it. Rutger Hauer is a joy to watch. :smoke:

It's very underrated IMHO.

I agree, it is underrated.

of all the threads I started, this is the one which is biggest?. Even in this forum, the non serious topics win. I am most definitely not happy with this being by biggest thread topic. But will do :mrgreen:

Already mentioned, but I'll add my vote for:

Metropolis
Nosferatu
Twelve Monkeys

And I'll add La Jetée, the short film by Chris Marker. This was the inspiration for Twelve Monkeys.

Finally, I can't believe nobody has mentioned Primer. Very, very good independent film made for an incredibly low budget.

XKCD nails the confusing plot of Primer in this very funny comparative chart of movie narratives. (Hard to see detail here; click the link for the original in larger size):

I find Wall-E to be overrated, but it's good film none the less.

Overrated compared to what? I rather liked Wall-E and was heard croaking "Waaall-Eee" "Eeeeeeve" for quite a long time. Howabout rating it as one of the better animated SciFi movies?

If we're heading into that territory: Broken Saints. 9 hours of crikey.

Of course it is. :)

Overrated in it being number 53 of the all time best films on IMDB, but then again I don't understand why the fuck Star Wars is number 11 and 17 on the same list.

I just watched The Fly tonight. I had recorded it on my Sky box just 'fore Halloween so that was handy. Last time I saw it was about 20 years ago when I had it on VCR and watched it almost daily 'til I practically knew it off by heart.
I've been putting watching it because I was afraid I would look at it now and find it shite. I was wrong. It's more awesome than I could appreciate then :awesome:
The story is basically Spiderman taken to its logical conclusion.

I've not been through the entire thread, most of these probably mentioned, but some personal fave's;

Twelve Monkeys
Alien
The Omega Man
Silent Running
Brazil

Do the original King Kong and Karloff Frankenstein count?

And the fantasy list is short;

Jason and the Argonauts

The only decent fantasy film!

Anyone remember Quintet, with Paul Newman? I vaguely saw it on the telly way back when, and only really noticed that it was interesting as it neared the end. Bleakly fatalistic. Wonder if I'd still like it... :ask:

Speaking of TV stuff: The Flipside of Dominick Hyde / Another Flip for Dominick. Two '80s BBC plays about a dude from the future. (Dunno why it says "1970" on that link!)

That is a great film, no doubt. Perhaps surprisingly, though, the George Clooney one comes closer to the original Stanislaw Lem novel. Lem did not like Tarkovsky's version.

...nor the Soderbergh version, I understand.

There is a BBC Radio dramatisation of Solaris which knocks it out of the park (2007 I think, written by Hattie Naylor), and IMO is superior to either movie in that it gives equal emphasis to both the personal story of Kelvin & Rheya, and the sci-fi element of the intelligent, incomprehensible ocean - which both movies overlooked completely. (And it's got a brilliant musical score to boot!)

If you like this novel, it's worth tracking down a copy of this radio drama from somewhere. :thumbup:

I have Cliff Martinez's soundtrack to the Soderbergh version: very unusual yet appropriate music.

bookmarking. Oh and I'll throw in Monster (2010) and I liked Sunshine. I know there are many more in my head but I can't recall them off the top of my head. Oh and anime films should be in their own category as most anime fall into scifi or fantasy.
