That's roughly how I recall it too. In fact JRRT was a bit of a stick-in-the-mud and was rather disappointed with the reforms implemented by the Vatican in his lifetime, even. However he also was leery of the zeal displayed by C.S.Lewis who was a late convert to "an evangelical flavor of Anglicanism". Or maybe he just couldn't get over Lewis' choice of churches :)

He was very disappointed that Lewis didn't join the Catholic church. Tolkien according to some disliked the Vaticans changes so much that instead of responding at the various points in a service in English (as per the reforms) he would respond in Latin. Exceptionally loud latin.

'Tolkien Way' was named after JRR's oldest son, Father John Francis Tolkien who was priest in charge of the catholic church Our lady of the angels and St. Peter in chains.

I knew he was related in some way. Got there in the end.
