(Yes, the Bakshi(?). Ironic name for someone who ran out of money - not very 'bakshi-ish'! Geddit? Geddit? :shifty: )

The rotogravure was cheaper than getting the animators to do it, and it got the product to the market faster. The poor quality of the roto helped kill the movie at the box office. The movie looks "slapped together" because Bakshi spent too much time on some sections and lost control of the production.

For me, Lord of the Rings is one of those books that, even if you're reading it for the nth time, it's just as fresh and surprising as reading it for the first time.

And I loved the films too. :)

Beyond simply being fresh each time, I find I see something new every time - some depth of understanding of the overall world becomes clearer, or I discover some little line which explains an old nagging question.

Tolkein was the Second Coming of Christ, and he left for us a new revelation.

He left for us the collections of Middle-Earth, specifically the Lord of the Rings.

I thought I was the only Tolkien nerd on this forum, glad to see there are others!

My collection:

The Lord of the Rings
The Hobbit
The Silmarillion
Unfinished Tales
Book of Lost Tales Part Two (worth it for the Fall of Gondolin narrative!)
The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien (lost somewhere around the house, it's not a good idea to read while stoned)
Children of Hurin

The films were great as well, however some of the inaccuracies were simply intolerable. Elves at Helms Deep? What the fuck!

I also found something interesting on youtube, where a guy has built himself his own hobbit hole/ Shire home, which is quite awesome.

It was somewhat of a joke based on a headline I was in The War Illustrated. "The Fall of Gandor."

Haven't been following that one too closely but Guillermo Del Toro bowed out last week or maybe it was before that so yes, they are continuing to have problems. The word from the production (Jackson et al) is that if nobody else steps up to the plate, Jackson will gird his loins and direct the 1st half.

Yah. It's been speculated that some of his descriptions of the landscape of Mordor grew out of his personal experience in the trench warfare of WWI. He did state at one point that by 1918, all but one of his close friends were dead. In WWI.

The Dead Marshes may well have arisen from some of his experiences on the Somme IIRC.

Well, the Swedish translations are a mixed bag. The first one had some great prose, but several mistakes, while the other is more correct, but lacking some of the lustre of the first translation.
