I've tried to give superhero movies a chance, but I can't take it any more. The Dark Knight is a masterpiece of the genre, but other than that, they're somewhere between boring and ridiculous. Add to that the fact that we're at least 5 years past peak-superhero.

Punch-Drunk Love (2002) is probably one of the best of Adam Sandler's movies. It's actually poignant (as opposed to pungent) in places, and it gets a respectable 7.3 score at IMDb.

Agreed.
As someone who enjoys visual effects artistry, I initially found them watchable on that level. Now I just see a tedious sameness in all of them... big action sequences interspersed with a bit of perfunctory dialogue. Actors routinely give way to CG stand-ins, which are well modeled (having been made from scans of the thespians) but look fake because of the physics-defying movement.

I went to see The Dark Knight with friends, who had been hyped by it getting record breaking scores on imdb. We came away all agreeing it was pretty awful. I liked all the joker stuff, but the rest of the film, and Batman himself, I found vacillated between tedium and cringe.

I find all the other superhero films pretty unwatchable, and I've no idea what the appeal was with the Avengers. I didn't even get to the end of it. I think if I had kids, I'd be able to enjoy these films much better with them.

I'm hoping I'll enjoy Logan, though.

"Horror" films in general are stupid to the point of pissing me off. One can only watch "hey, let's split up" a limited number of time before it gets annoying.

Anything with Jason Statham. Hasn't he made basically the same stupid movie now 15 times?

Yep. Same as Seagal, Van Damme and some others. When your main (or perhaps only) talent is punching people in the face, it somewhat limits the horizons of artistic expression.

Yes, I will avoid Will Farrell movies at all costs, the one character he plays isn't funny.

Even Talladega nights? Shake and Bake baby!
I don't know how anyone can keep a straight face through the hospital scene with the knife.

I only watched 20 or 30 minutes of it, which didn't make me laugh once. I'll take a look for the hospital scene :)

No Contact then? :o
I largely agree. But Jim Carey can be very funny sometimes, even though most of the movies he's in are dumb.

Even after all these years, Ace Ventura is still really fucking funny.

Yeah. It's an extremely stupid movie, but some funny stuff. His driving for one.

I avoid movies with McConaughey, and if I do end up watching one, it is with low expectations.

I liked Contact mostly. Didn't like McConaughey in it, though.

Scot, did you see MM in True Detective? I was spellbound! His performance made the show.
Evolution saddens me. In an environment where irrational thinking is protected, the disparity in the population rate of creationists vs that of rational thinkers, equates to a creationist win. Let's remove warning labels from products as an equalizer.

I cringed whenever he showed up in Contact. Here I am enjoying some faux-sciento Jodie Foster and then this fucking surfer theologian shows up. Get the fuck out of my watchy movie.

Just the plain existence of that character in the movie sucked, regardless of the actor.
Unfortunately we have to put up with that whole thread (faith) to see what's otherwise a great movie. I'm going to read the book...someday. Maybe that aspect wasn't part of the original story?
