The trouble is you have defend against two of the worst situations which are not really compatible. Wind is one thing but throw in floods that is another ball game. Then it is not up to the individual but a community/state/country problem. The number of hurricanes would make it a very plausible to look at a wider solution.

Well, this is taking a hell of a lot longer than I thought but progress is being made. My 50 year old knees aren’t built for this. The biggest issue though is my inexperience with troweling the adhesive. Application takes time to get proper cover and because I take longer than a more experienced installer the adhesive gums up more and I need to clean the tools more often. Also not the greatest floor either. I wish we would have had the extra 15K to repour the slab. Anyway, I’m fairly pleased with the result so far.

Also, the electrical is now complete.

 I love those. I'm out too right now.
A side benefit of going to a lot of yard sales and bargain hunting is not having to pay retail for hardware very often. I'm still a little irked over paying $6 for a little box of nails.

Indeed. I’m amazed when costing out a job how much screws and nails add to the project.

Drywall screws are the duct tape of the screw world, I use them for all sorts of shit. Repaired some rattan furniture the other day with a couple of them.

I don't advise using drywall screws for other than drywall. I've found two major weaknesses in them. First, they are not corrosion resistant, at all. I see many failures of these screws when used in exterior applications. They are also very hard steel. Great strength in tension. But, doesn't withstand repetitive flexing well. The corrosion susceptibility is a matter of materials. There's no need for corrosion resistant drywall screws, ever. Drywall isn't used in wet environments. The poor flex performance is probably a combination of the cross section of the drywall screw and its metallurgy.

Anyway, your point in using screws in the first place is to get a long term result. Drywall screws won't deliver that result very far from their designed use.

I mostly use construction screws or cabinet screws.

So all the knob and tube has been pulled out and electrical is complete. Passed final inspection — only had to temporarily move the washer to the back deck for the inspection as the the inspector didn’t like that there was only two feet in front of the sub panel.
So 18k later we have a full 200 amps and more than one receptacle per room if there was one at all.
What blows my mind is that this 1913 house once had gaslamps. Here’s a shot of some gas tubing still in the wall

Annnnndddd....

Finally finished the basement apartment with delivery and install of the fridge from Home Despot. A few months later than I wanted thanks to Ikea’s incompetence. Next time with them it’s cash and carry. Their delivery “service” is a nightmare.
Anyhoo, finally finished the kitchen myself. Just waiting for the washer/dryer which hopefully will show up before we show the place.

Pro Bono? Is that someone who makes a living as one half of a Sonny and Cher tribute act?

Been there. Done that. Had a fantastic time.

When a friend of mine retired, he bought a 20 acre patch of land a few kilometres to the west of the Noosa National Park. He wanted to build a cabin on it, but was not interested in doing any of the work himself, so he engaged a carpenter (who was a 75 year old retiree) and flew me up from Sydney to assist him. The deal was that I stayed in a huge tent on the land with him, he provided the food, cooked and let me nick off to the park with his car whenever a swell was running in the park. Apart from getting the worst sunburn of my life while nude surfing at Granite Bay, it was all good. Of course I visited him a few times since, until he died in 1986. Here's the cabin ten years after it was finished.

Although what happened next - at least in hind(oops)sight - was hilarious, it's not something I ever did again, I assure you. The blisters were monstrous. I could not sit down for three days.

I'd even give you your own camper to sleep in, and mountain bike to ride. My neighbor can lend you his fishing gear and you can fish in my brook.
If i'm away and you need to run to town for supplies, you can call uber. It gets pretty good "natural gas" mileage. :yuk:
