No. I just meant that the word itself is generally considered derogatory rather than affectionate, say.

That’s really the problem in these isles - we live so cheek by jowl that distinctions are mainly arbitrary at this point. I live in England, but am aware of 3 out of the 4 (England Ireland Scotland Wales) areas close by in my ancestry. We’re all probably like that. Practically all of us will be of Celtic stock if our ancestors have been hanging around here for any length of time. And that’s my moan for the day.

My father was Scottish but I was born in Wales because of his work. My mother's family are of Irish/Scottish stock. I don't know of anyone in my family who is English.

Yep. Sounds familiar. Dad Irish and English, although the English side also mixed in with Irish. Mum Scottish and English, although again the English is mixed in with Irish. I wasn’t born in the British Isles. Yet I would probably be referred to as a Sassenach by a Scot, because of where I live and my accent.

Christ. See, this was my point.

It wasn't a Scot who used the word. And honestly? Who does use it? I'll tell you - the same as here. People from other parts of UK, or the world, using it jokingly.

It's as much a part of common usage in Scotland as "Hoots mon!" or "Och aye the noo". ie not used by people in Scotland, but used by others as if it is.

*sigh*

I've been called a lot of things by Scots over the years, but never ever heard one say that word.

Post-Brexit UK is not doing all that well.

An interesting update on the trade relationship between the UK and the EU: German exports to the UK fell to their lowest level since 2013 last year.

The UK is Germany’s fifth-largest customer, but exports fell 4.2% to €78.7bn. At the same time Germany’s total exports rose 0.8% year-on-year to reach a record high.

Exports to=Import from. I could see Brexiters saying that’s a good thing. Less European stuff. However, if it is supplies needed to run a business or a factory it can indicate a downturn in overall economic activity.

We’ve bid for a @Conservatives or @ScotTories representative to come on @BBCScotNine this evening to discuss their flagship immigration policy. Asked Home Sec, Home Office Minister, Scot Sec, Under SoS, @Jackson_Carlaw or any Scottish
MP or MSP. Not one of them can/will do it.

I'll need to watch Newsnight, I'm guessing they might be able to get someone on to defend it.
