Recognizing how damaging are the Trump administration's policies and programs is not a towering achievement. The problem with US politics at the moment includes the fact that whoever is not in power sits around for two to four years scheming about how to unseat the idiots who are in power. Anyone who thinks the likes of Bernie Sanders would have put a damper on this behavior is only fooling himself, and is just waiting around for somebody who can stick it to the enemy even more emphatically than the next candidate. I don't see this ending in anything but another civil war. Give it another decade or two, if anyone escalates the issue and electoral politics doesn't solve the problem. What should be accepted is that Trumpism just disguises the wish for Trumpism to have its own nation, but not by secession from the US, which would be the least painful option.
Many of the people you'd like to give a 'better explanation' to are dimly aware of the costs and flaws of identity politics, and many of the people you might think don't need an explanation are blissfully unaware of the costs and flaws of identity politics. The Proud Boys can be seen clearly as having aspects of identity politics in opposition to identity poliics. It just breeds contempt.
