What's the betting there's an upsurge in teenagers declaring themselves "transgendered" in order to avoid military service after this announcement?

Then we'll see the orange scrotum whingeing and bleating on Twitter about a personnel shortage in the military.

Tosser.

I though military service wasn't compulsory in the US?

Correct. Males aged 18-25 need to register for the selective service (draft) still, though.

What does that mean?
Over here both men are automatically registered as being drafted, via government records.
However while there is still officially and legally a conscription, there's no requirement to actually serve or train.

Selective service is usually called the draft. That means that if need be, they will select people from that list to serve. Afaik, people still aren't automatically signed up for Selective Service here.
Perhaps trans people will be automatically disqualified now.

What state are you in again? You might be surprised, as Selective Service has been known to be somewhat sneaky.

At any rate, the draft hasn't been used since Vietnam and it's my understanding that the US military doesn't want conscripts. Conscripts are great if you want a bunch of kids in uniform to charge at another bunch of kids in uniform; that's not what 21st Century wars look like though. The economic policies of the current administration are probably going to give the military enough volunteers anyway, so Cali's wide of the mark here.

It's been several decades and MANY wars since the draft was used in the US. I really doubt anyone has to worry about it.

With Trump in office and the prospect of wars that our current armed forces can't support I'm very much so worried about it. In fact, that was the very first thing that crossed my mind when I realized he really was going to become POTUS. Assuming he isn't removed from office my oldest son will reach selective service age with plenty of time left for Trump to start something which requires a draft. So ya, I'm a bit worried about it.

We all know people of draftable age.

There have been wars under every American president, none of which have used the draft, in decades. Trump isn't unique in the starting wars respect and he's not going to use the draft for his wars either.

The draft is dead. The wars are what need to be stopped.

Officially, yes.

All the others had their gender officially changed to "tulip" to avoid the draft.

My bad. I originally though both men and women were drafted, but discovered that's incorrect.
So I changed the sentence, apparently forgetting to remove 'both'.

Are you aware that Maine has enacted (though not yet implemented) legislation to sign guys up for the draft when they get a driver's license? Maine's legislation is at least optional; some states just sign guys up automatically.

Remember, Selective Service is technically required by law. There's a whole bunch of Federal assistance programmes (mostly related to federal education grants and loans) that men cannot access if they're not signed up. Ironically - given how the subject came up - a number of transmen have apparently run afoul of this post-transition. I say ironically, because Trump's recent order may let these guys off the hook.

More here.

My point was that it doesn't happen automatically, which I spelled out clearly. I'm aware that men who are not signed up can't receive certain services and privileges. That doesn't mean that registration happens automatically, it doesn't. As far as Maine is concerned, people don't automatically sign up for a driver's license, so aren't automatically signed up for selective service. :)

http://www.newyorker.com/news/ryan-lizza/anthony-scaramucci-called-me-to-unload-about-white-house-leakers-reince-priebus-and-steve-bannon

Anthony Scaramucci Called Me to Unload About White House Leakers, Reince Priebus, and Steve Bannon

He started by threatening to fire the entire White House communications staff. It escalated from there.

[...]

“Who leaked that to you?” he asked. I said I couldn’t give him that information. He responded by threatening to fire the entire White House communications staff. “What I’m going to do is, I will eliminate everyone in the comms team and we’ll start over,” he said. [...] “You’re an American citizen, this is a major catastrophe for the American country. So I’m asking you as an American patriot to give me a sense of who leaked it.”

[...]

“They’ll all be fired by me,” he said. “[...] Reince Priebus—if you want to leak something—he’ll be asked to resign very shortly.” The issue, he said, was that he believed Priebus had been worried about the dinner because he hadn’t been invited. “Reince is a fucking paranoid schizophrenic, a paranoiac,” Scaramucci said. He channelled Priebus as he spoke: “ ‘Oh, Bill Shine is coming in. Let me leak the fucking thing and see if I can cock-block these people the way I cock-blocked Scaramucci for six months.’ ” (Priebus did not respond to a request for comment.)

[...]

Scaramucci also told me that, unlike other senior officials, he had no interest in media attention. “I’m not Steve Bannon, I’m not trying to suck my own cock,” he said, speaking of Trump’s chief strategist. “I’m not trying to build my own brand off the fucking strength of the President. I’m here to serve the country.” (Bannon declined to comment.)

Ho-lee fuck. This guy is totally insane

Right. Because Trump supporters weren't all over videos of Hillary supposedly having senior moments. Now it's nothing.

That’s irrelevant now, she’s not the president, he is.

Right. That makes his senility even worse, and the Trumpflakes' attacks on Clinton even more hypocritical.

Right, but imagine how batshit crazy the Trumpists would go over a video of Clinton doing something like this.

What a fucking embarrassment this was.

A leader of the Boy Scouts of America apologized Thursday for a speech that President Trump gave to thousands of teenage Scouts earlier this week — in which Trump broke with the Scouts’ earnest traditions by criticizing his political opponents, recounting his election victory and talking about parties on yachts.

“I want to extend my sincere apologies to those in our Scouting family who were offended by the political rhetoric that was inserted into the jamboree. That was never our intent,” Michael Surbaugh, whose title is chief Scout executive, wrote in a message posted online.

Bill Browder's Testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee

The financier Bill Browder has emerged as an unlikely central player in the ongoing investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 elections. Sergei Magnitsky, an attorney Browder hired to investigate official corruption, died in Russian custody in 2009. Congress subsequently imposed sanctions on the officials it held responsible for his death, passing the Magnitsky Act in 2012. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government retaliated, among other ways, by suspending American adoptions of Russian children.

Natalia Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer who secured a meeting with Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and Paul Manafort, was engaged in a campaign for the repeal of the Magnitsky Act, and raised the subject of adoptions in that meeting. That’s put the spotlight back on Browder’s long campaign for Kremlin accountability, and against corruption—a campaign whose success has irritated Putin and those around him.

Browder will testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday in a hearing about Foreign Agents Registration Act enforcement; what follows are the prepared remarks he submitted to the committee.

It's amazing to watch someone so eager to defend their Lord and Savior, that they trip over themselves by making a point that actually demolishes theirs. It's like Trump supporters are parrots repeating phrases they've heard before, but have no idea what they mean.
