XCOM is one of those classic games I heard about too late. I found out about them within the last couple years and while the premise is interesting, it just seems so old-school clunky that I haven't shelled out the cash at gog for them. So if the remake is decent, I'll look forward to getting it.

wait, you find old-school games too clunky? I find new-school games too shiny, myself.

OMFG! There are few games that I've enjoyed and played as much as XCOM. Must be about 17 years ago.

I actually played this again last year, if only for a few days. An absolute classic.

One of my all time favorite games.

I remember playing it for the first time. I managed to breeze through the first few crash sites with only a few squaddie casualties. Then, one night, I hear some weird noise and one of my squaddies, who happens to be carrying a loaded rocket launcher, takes out half the squad with a rocket, and I realize in horror that there is some kind of crazy mind control shit going on.

I remember losing an entire Skyranger of soldiers because my first guy out of the SR set off the op. fire of an alien who was armed with a rocket launcher.

I always liked the concept of Xcom, but never got into playing it.

I bet you lost a lot of international funding after that.

I've had stuff like that happen, where they're camping right by the exit to the Skyranger. Never lost an entire squad from one megablaster, or whatever those alien podlauncher things were called, though. That was part of the fun of the game, I think, that you never knew for sure if any routine mission could suddenly end in disaster.

Ah, the Blaster Launcher!

It wasn't even necessary to get a direct hit with this thing, but the sadist in me just loved nuking a single sectoid and levelling everything in an 11 tile radius.

Ah yes, that's what they were called. Those things were fun. When the aliens attacked your base, you could pretty much hide everyone and spam the blaster bombs everywhere, since they could go around corners. Luckily, the aliens weren't smart enough to use them very well, and would often blow themselves up.

I remember my fist time going to mars. One of the first guys off psi attacks an alien and then with the aliens view I psi attack another and so on, about 3 or 4 in a row. Then the next squaddie in line fires off the BL setting a path along the newly spotted territory. For the last waypoint I knew they were on the second floor and just shot it up there but couldn't see anything else. After the final blast I get the final cutscene. WTF???. I blew up the Mars base control room with half my squad still on or just coming off the transport.

ETA: For anyone interested in an updated version check out the UFO Afterlight series. They worked to duplicate the best of XCom but the 1st one is a little limited. No interiors IIRC

I don't like modern games like X-Com so much. I wish they would remake Laser Squad, or Rebelstar Raiders, or Chaos instead :coffee:

X-Com is a modern game?
Anyone remember Breach? A really old game that was similar to the tactical game in X-Com. What was fun about it was you could make your own missions.

Ooh I enjoyed XCOM too, I think I remember that you could guide those missile thingies through the spaceship windows and do some shock and awe in their ship.

I also remember a similar style of game on the Spectrum years beforehand, I forget the name though, you had to grab the alien eggs and make it to the extraction ship with as many survivors as possible. It was far more basic though.

I had to go and buy the XCOM pack from Steam. I blame you lot.

Try playing the first game without loading. Almost impossible to win.
