If the rest of the image is inverted again, it looks kind of neat, but the problem remains: Even though one might have an association, it doesn't stand for or signify anything. It's just a posh nothing...

That's a great looking design, but I can't help thinking it looks too much like a skate shoe logo. :dunno:

By the way Emergence, you must be a graphic designer by profession, yes? Some of the stuff you have come up with here, while I might not think all of it is a good choice for this site, is quite spectacularly good. I'm honestly amazed you can come up with so many professional labels in such quick succession. [/slobbering]

Fucking hell. Those are all mighty good. At first sight I really dig concept #3. Although I don't quite get it

Cheers. Number one has a little 'tree of life' in it. Concept 2 is supposed to be a rat, but I was restricted by the shape of the nose, etc. and I didn't spend that much time doing it either.

Number 3 sort of shows broadcasting, since we are a community that 'reaches out' as well as being Internet based (communication, broadcasting, etc.). It pretty much just relates to that.

Concept 4 and 5 are supposed to be these:

Whilst being RS at the same time. Just concepts at the moment, but if people like any aspects then either I or someone else can build on it.

I too am curious if design is your day job. Do you have a website where we could see more of your work?

I'm a neurobiologist who made the wrong career choice some 15 years ago. :waah: If you know someone who would be willing to give an opportunity to a career changer in Germany in these economically challenging times, let me know... ;)
No website yet. I don't really know why, though.

NEVER too late! And you absolutely have to get a website up. So you can have a link in your signature. You never know who might see it here. Your English is perfect, I never would have suspected English wasn't your first language. Not that that should be a criteria for anything, but it must help if you want to enter the international market. And in these days of the internet and Skype there's no reason you have to limit yourself to Germany for work?

I started out in science, got a PhD and then immediately left. I'm now working as a religious education consultant for my local authority, where my goal is to make it a subject totally inclusive of non-religious viewpoints. Lots of opportunities for creative thinking and I've never taught in a school. And I started out as a temporary admin person here 10 years ago.

Is your avatar your own work? If it isn't, can I suggest you start showcasing your designs in your avatar? You probably never knew justwondering? She is only occasionally here these days; she was more active on RD.net. She's a digital artist and she used to cycle her works in her avatar and signatures. (Not that you are meant to be touting for business here, but it doesn't hurt to showcase your talent.)

There's lots of us who haven't taken the straightforward path.

Thanks for the encouraging words, Nora. The problem is - as so often - financing the switch, and getting enough time to concentrate on it, while working to finance it. I do a tiny bit of freelance work on the side, but i have to put more pressure behind it i fear. Unfortunately i can't do that at the moment, because i have other pressing issues to solve first. Anyways, nice to have this contest as a creative pressure-release. ;)

The avatar isn't mine. It's the librarian from the cover of Terry Pratchett's latest book "Unseen Academicals". Don't think circling my work as avatars would be good. The avatar size to small and that botches many images. But getting a webpage up as soon as possible and linking to it from my sig is a good idea. As i said: I have to sort some things out first.

May i ask what your PhD is in?

I is not fan of concept 2. I don't know what it's meant to be but it looks like a penguin with a tennis ball on his head about to punch himself in the face.

It's a rat on steroids - leave him alone! But yes, as I said earlier, I was inhibited by the shape of the rat's nose and I drew the concepts in about 30 minutes (all 5 of them) whilst watching TV, so they are a bit rushed.

I like the middle row, very nice. I also like the bottom grey one, the other two don't look so clear on a dark background. I love the image though. No virtual cookie for me though I'll let someone else guess.

Yeah, it is a Möbius strip in the shape of the infinity sign. But i didn't think of "infinite discussions" (though it's probably a good thought, too  ) but rather "never ending inquiry" as one idea behind it. The second idea was the continuous surface of the Möbius strip signifying that Rationality and skepticism are different expressions of the same mindset (on one unbounded continuum), one always leading to the other, so to say. and the third was to, very, very abstractly integrate the rs into the image. The Ball gives it some dynamic, but also serves as part of the r. I thought it wasn't necessary to be obvious for the image to work and stand on its own, but might be a nice "gimmick" for those who recognize it....

Oh, I thought the ball was an electron, or the pale blue dot(in the right row).

I really like the logo.
I once applied for a job as a mustard cutter.

But unfortunately I wasn’t quite good enough.
