Hans-Peter Dürr
(7 October 1929 – 18 May 2014)
German physicist. In addition to nuclear and quantum physics, elementary particles and gravitation, epistemology, and philosophy, he has advocated responsible scientific and energy policies. Dürr was a member of the Club of Rome and served on the scientific committee of the Vienna Internationale Akademie für Zukunftsfragen, advocating sustainable, equitable, and viable development, emphasizing energy efficiency and sufficiency as a point of entry. From 2006 until his death, he was a founding councillor at the World Future Council.

Gordon Hugh Willis, Jr. ASC
(May 28, 1931 – May 18, 2014)
American cinematographer. He was best known for his work on Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather series as well as Woody Allen's Annie Hall and Manhattan. His fellow cinematographer William Fraker had called Willis' work "a milestone in visual storytelling". In 2009, at the inaugural Governors Awards, the Academy chose Willis as the recipient of the Academy Honorary Award for his life's work.

Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski
(6 July 1923 – 25 May 2014)
Polish military officer and communist politician. He was the last communist leader of Poland from 1981 to 1989. Jaruzelski was unsuccessful in convincing Wałęsa to include Solidarity in a "grand coalition" with the communists, and Jaruzelski resigned his position of general secretary of the Polish Communist Party on 29 July 1989.

Massimo Vignelli
(January 10, 1931 – May 27, 2014)
Italian designer who did work in a number of areas ranging from package design to houseware design to furniture design to public signage to showroom design through Vignelli Associates, which he co-founded with his wife, Lella. He said, "If you can design one thing, you can design everything," and this is reflected in his broad range of work. Vignelli worked firmly within the Modernist tradition, and focused on simplicity through the use of basic geometric forms in all his work.

Maya Angelou
(born Marguerite Ann Johnson; April 4, 1928; died May 28, 2014[3])
American author and poet. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, and several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning more than fifty years. She received dozens of awards and over thirty honorary doctoral degrees. Angelou is best known for her series of seven autobiographies, which focus on her childhood and early adult experiences. The first, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings (1969), tells of her life up to the age of seventeen, and brought her international recognition and acclaim.

(16 March 1928 – 29 May 2014), sometimes referred to as Carl Boehm or Karl Boehm,
Austrian actor. He took part in 45 films and became well known in Austria and Germany for his role as Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria in the Sissi trilogy and internationally for his role as Mark, the psychopathic protagonist of Peeping Tom, directed by Michael Powell. He was the founder of the trust Menschen für Menschen (“Humans for Humans”), which helps people in need in Ethiopia. He also received honorary Ethiopian citizenship in 2003.

American, born in New Orleans to a white father and black mother, was a lesbian whose scuffle with police was one of the defining moments of the Stonewall riots, spurring the crowd to action. Some have referred to her as "the gay community’s Rosa Parks".

American television actress. Davis achieved prominence for her role in The Bob Cummings Show (1955–59) for which she twice won the Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, but she was best known for playing the part of Alice Nelson, the housekeeper in The Brady Bunch series (1969–74).

Maggie's remains were found, buried deep in mud and debris, by rangers working for New Zealand's Kakapo Recovery Programme on Codfish Island off the country's South Island. After the death of Maggie and two other kakapo in recent months the population is now back at 127.

American feminist attorney, author, and activist. Beginning her career as a journalist, she joined the National Organization for Women in 1969. In October 2009, she was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. DeCrow describes her ultimate goal as "a world in which the gender of a baby will have little to no relevance in future pursuits and pleasures—personal, political, economic, social and professional."

Yuri Kochiyama
(born Mary Nakahara.; May 19, 1921 – June 1, 2014)
Japanese American human rights activist. Interned after Pearl Harbor. In 1960, Kochiyama and her husband Bill moved to Harlem in New York City and joined the Harlem Parents Committee. She became acquainted with Malcolm X and was a member of his Organization of Afro-American Unity. In 2005, Kochiyama was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize through the “1,000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize 2005” project.
