John Pinette
(March 23, 1964 – April 5, 2014)

I missed this in April when it was announced. He was one of my favorite stand-ups.

Stand-up comedian John Pinette, 50, was found dead in his room Saturday at the Sheraton Station Square hotel. Apart from his standup routines, he was known for his role in the finale of the TV show "Seinfeld." (4/7/2014)

The hotel's security detail opened Mr. Pinette's room for the relative, where they found him and called city police.

The comedian was pronounced dead at the scene around 2:30 p.m.

A supervisor with the Allegheny County medical examiner's office said Mr. Pinette had been suffering liver and heart disease and that his death was due to natural causes. No autopsy was performed, after Mr. Pinette's personal physician signed off on the cause of death.

Mr. Pinette, a native of Boston, was known for his impressions and his self-deprecating pokes at his weight. He reportedly had to delay a series of performances in August to undergo treatment in a rehabilitation facility for prescription drug addiction.

Casey Kasem

Radio icon Casey Kasem dies at 82
Casey Kasem, a radio voice who connected generations of Americans to thousands of rock and pop acts, died Sunday morning, according to multiple media outlets. He was 82.

Kerri Kasem, Casey's daughter, announced the news on her Facebook page.

"Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends. Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken," she wrote in a Facebook post. "Thank you for all your love, support and prayers. The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian; we will miss our Dad."

Kasem, hospitalized in Washington state since June 1, had been in declining health.

My memories of Francis Matthews were not Captain Scarlet but Sherlock Holmes.

Holmes and the Ripper by Brian Clemens was a rather excellent 1988 production starring Francis Matthews and Frank Windsor as Holmes and Watson. I saw it at Buxton Opera House with a young lady who became my wife.
