It was such a relief the moment Biden was sworn in, and Trump's window to do theoretically do something nuts with nuclear weapons passed. I'm sure some part of him was tempted to attempt to order a nuclear attack on the inauguration ceremony; things certainly felt a lot less tense the moment that was no longer even a theoretical possibility.

Apparently, Pence had been wavering on whether or not to go along with the coup, and fucking Dan Quayle talked him out of it. We were saved by Dan Fucking Quayle.

I've had a few political books to read over the Trump era. Avoiding the most directly to do with Trump. Except I read the Cohen book. It was even a little entertaining.

Now I ordered the last of the Woodward books. I had planned to move on, put this behind. But it is hard to ignore Trump till 2024 when he will become irrelevant. Provided the Democrats do not lose the house and senate in 2022, I will move on to the other two Woodward books.

Longtime GOP operatives charged with funneling Russian national’s money to Trump, RNC

Two veteran Republican campaign operatives — including one who got a pardon from then-President Donald Trump one month before he left office — are charged in a new federal indictment with funneling $25,000 from a Russian national into the Trump campaign in 2016.

Jesse Benton, 43, and Doug Wead, 75, made brief appearances Monday at a video hearing in U.S. District Court in Washington, pleading not guilty to six felony charges including facilitating a campaign contribution by a foreign national, acting as a straw donor and causing the filing of false campaign finance reports.

The grand jury indictment alleges that Benton and Wead worked together to accept $100,000 from an unidentified Russian national in order to get the foreigner a meeting with then-candidate Trump at a fundraiser in Philadelphia on Sept. 22, 2016.

Neither Trump nor his campaign are mentioned by name in the indictment, but details in the 19-page document make clear that the scheme involved seeking the donation in connection with the Trump event and an opportunity to get face to face with him.

For example, the indictment’s reference to a $25,000 donation on Oct. 27, 2016, to a political committee by Benton — allegedly to cover up the foreign source of the money — lines up with a donation of the same size and date to Trump’s political committee attributed to a “Jesse Bentor,” which prosecutors said is a garbling of Benton’s name.

There is no indication in the indictment that Trump or his campaign aides were aware that the money originated with the Russian donor. The charges say that Benton and Wead “concealed” the arrangement from Trump, and that part of the scheme involved getting the political committees to “unwittingly” file reports indicating that Benton was actually the source of the funds.

The indictment suggests that Benton and Wead hoped to make money from the scheme and did — taking $100,000 from the Russian, but paying only $25,000 to Trump Victory, a joint venture between the Trump campaign and the Republican National Committee.

Benton, a veteran of Kentucky and presidential politics, had previously faced federal campaign finance charges for payments to a key Iowa state lawmaker who switched endorsements from Michelle Bachman to Ron Paul in the 2012 presidential GOP primary. Trump, just before leaving office, pardoned Benton for the crimes he was convicted of. Benton is also an in-law and former adviser to Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who is Ron Paul’s son. Benton previously led Sen. Mitch McConnell’s 2014 reelection campaign before stepping down amid legal scrutiny.

The fake Russia collusion wasn't fake? why didn't we impeach Trump on day 1? Or after Putin meet?

Some time ago, I wrote several posts, in which I presented the possibility that the Orange Scrotum might launch World War III as the ultimate means of masturbating his ego, once the prospect of mainlining the drug of being US President was no longer available to him. Sample posts presenting this possibility include this one, this one, and this one being possibly the instances of my oeuvre on this subject that reflect best the view in question. Others following the relevant historical chain through several threads may, of course, prefer other choices, but, I'm on public record in several places here, as having expressed this view, and this is what matters for the purpose of this, my latest post.

I now learn, courtesy of various other posters in this thread (special hat tip to Seabass for providing both written articles and the Late Show video clips), that an actual serving senior commander in the nuclear command chain essentially agreed with me, to the extent of putting in place emergency measures to prevent this.

This has to constitute a special "WOW" moment for me. I expected my musings to be regarded as hyperbolic in some quarters, but I never expected to see an actual chief of staff not only agree with said musings, but act to prevent the requisite actions becoming a nightmare reality.

Ye fucking gods of all stars (yes, I'm a fan of James Blish), this really does bring into sharp relief, how dangerous and unhinged Trump really is. In effect, Milley came to regard Trump as a threat to the human species itself.

I was half-conscious at the time that calling him a fucking fascist very early could be perhaps hyperbolic. Certainly after Jan 6 I lost any shred of doubt completely.

From the "you couldn't make this up" department:

The Cyber Ninjas, the mob tasked with discovering that Trump had in fact won Arizona in last November's presidential elections reported back that, on the contrary, their own recount placed the loser in an even worse position. Their count found 99 more votes for Biden and 261 fewer votes for the loser than the official tally. So the recount made Trump 360 votes worse off. Trump's comment on the recount?
"We won at the Arizona forensic audit yesterday at a level that you wouldn't believe," Trump told the crowd in Perry, Georgia. "They had headlines that Biden wins in Arizona, when they know it's not true. He didn't win in Arizona. He lost in Arizona based on the forensic audit."

More here.

Trump’s Press Sec: He Called Me to Insist His Penis Wasn’t Toadstool-Shaped

Also, he told Putin he would have to publicly scold him for meddling in our election, but that it was just for show.

I doubt this needs to be said here, but just for posterity:
All of the accusations that I've heard from Grisham's book sound plausible, but still, she has very little credibility. I know she resigned after the insurrection, but for a day or two the wind was blowing towards Republicans denouncing that riot. That makes me expect that her resignation was totally self-serving. Now she's cashing in on her time in the administration just like so many before her.

There's also that having some "manifest disinformation" out there would decidedly be in Trump's favour (e.g. "they lied about the penis phone call so therefore they lied about the Russian collusion as well").

That Walter Reed visit is also in question. I admit I may have half-believed the colonoscopy story given how thin that orange skin is but no, it sounded like a lot going on just to manage that sort of procedure. Melanoma apparently didn't know the why for the admission there.

I think it's a fair point that some journos should be more sceptical before breathlessly repeating some points from the book such as the above [Haberman apparently one example].

Another one is the 'only appeared tough to Putler for the cameras'. Well that's generally a 'no shit Sherlock' for anyone that was paying attention, in fact, that doesn't exactly speak to that Helsinki meeting. He looked like a freshly-whipped submissive.

This is a good video in whole, but I couldn't find a shorter clip with the jingle he sings at 6:50. While playing as Eric Trump, singing "No one hugs like my dad, beats up thugs like my dad, no one snorts lots of add drugs like my dad."   That's gold Stephen, gold! :dopey:

And now he's bleating about executive privilege. He should be told where to shove that, although it's getting crowded in there with sedition GOPers and reich-wing media.

I'm still not seeing enough being done to make him pay for his attacks on democracy and the US' institutions, and if people don't stop being apathetic, pretending this is all safely in the past, then 2024 is back on the cards - this time, as the saying goes, he won't be such a nice guy!

Between that and what I still consider to be mass negligent homicide with regards to his clusterfuck of a covid 'response' I find it maddening at times that he isn't in front of a judge in chains.
