Sketchy. The only mainstream British press covering this are tabloids: Mail, Mirror, Express, Sun... but more credible outlets, and international media, either don't consider it substantiatedly newsworthy, or haven't got the scoop or whatever yet.

The thing that put me on to the story was it was on BBC news channel around 8pm, before it was on the BBC website.

Pure speculation - Mail on Sunday is a Tory paper, leak came from someone within the Tory government to a friendly journo (Hodges).

If you simply throw everything you hear straight at the wall the stuff that is actually worthwhile will get there faster than from people who make the effort required to confirm the stuff before throwing it at the wall.

That was essentially what I was thinking at the outset, but there's also something sketchy there when this particular brood of newspapers were so quick on the scoop. I think ronmcd may be right - Tory leak.

Seriously, I don't know what they were thinking when they withdrew from the Dublin regulation as that's only made the UK a far more attractive destination for asylum seekers. Even Iceland realizes this and they're not in the EU and a heck of a lot harder to get to by boat.

Why do you say that?

From what I can tell net numbers from Dublin III transfers, even before the Brexit referendum, were measured in the tens or hundreds while asylum applications were measured in the tens of thousands.

Although the transfers where what made the headlines, the Dublin Regulation also provided a lot of soft incentives for migrants not to enter the UK. Mainly, they'd only be able to put in one asylum application in one member state, typically the one where they first entered the EU. They'd be expected to remain until it was processed, and that'd determine their status across the entire bloc. Actual sanctions for moving to another country might have been rare, but the threat was there and the bureaucracy would get in the way of people attempting it.

Since the UK left though though, migrants who are prepared to cross the channel can lodge a separate claim there without even the possibility of being sent back. Seeing as the Rwanda program is in also tatters, they're probably not going to get sent there either, and onshore processing is pretty much guaranteed for anyone who can make it.

That's not to say that getting to the UK is some sort of special prize for asylum seekers or anything but it's probably better than, say, Hungary.

Cruella Braverman spent the afternoon at the asylum interment camp she broke the law to fill 2.25x over. All to appear in the right-wing press, being seen to sort the mess out (which she has certainly contributed to) and to ensure that right-wing talking points remain the focus of the 'public debate'.
