Who can afford it? It is one filthy noisy dump. The traffic is impossible. Bloody cars everywhere. So many beautiful cities in Europe but not London that is bottom of the list.

Well it's all subjective isn't it? people may like that, not me. I couldn't live in a place where nature is sectioned into little boxes spread around like London. I like on the edge of an AONB, woodland, rivers, fields, mini-lakes and couldn't imagine living in an area where I have to travel and navigate traffic just to get my feet on grass.

London does have some stellar institutions within its boundaries, such as the Natural History Museum, the National Gallery, the Tate British, Kew Gardens, the British Museum and the British Library. But take away those stellar institutions, and what have you left? What you have left, particularly once you reach the financial centre, is a gigantic money machine that looks as if it was constructed by the Borg. London is increasingly becoming littered with ever more garish and vulgar corporate penis extensions in glass and concrete, designed specifically to say to the lesser mortals on the streets below "we own this place, shut up and do what we want".

I can't really comment about that as I've never been to London. But here in Australia, Sydney is a hell hole for traffic, house affordability, [most expensive in the world I hear] architecturally weird [example, The Opera House] and all round rotten place to live in. By the way, my home city of Perth is one of the most expensive cities to live in. You can and often do pay $6 for a cappuccino in most café's.

Comparing February to April 2015 with the 3 months to January 2015, the number of people in employment increased by 114,000 (to reach 31.05 million), the number of unemployed people fell by 43,000 (to reach 1.81 million) and the number of people not in the labour force (economically inactive) aged from 16 to 64 fell by 10,000 (to reach 9.02 million).

Is it fair to describe this good news as part of the post recessionary cyclic upturn that is a feature of our economy, and less a positive feature of Tory austerity?

Well it's also worth noting that the actual number of hours worked hasn't risen much. More people in 'employment', but no more hours being worked = smoke &a mirrors with employment stats.

So many new jobs are part-time, zero hours etc., that it doesn't add up to much at all.

If I have read the stats correctly, there was a year on year, 14% increase in women (16000) stating that the reason they were in part time work was due to illnesss or disability.

Dafuk's going on there do you think? :o

I agree and I live in one of the most beautiful parts of the UK - the coastal part of the South Hams in Devon. However, I wouldn't mind a weekend pad in a leafy Kensington street or square so I could easily get to all the shows & exhibitions. I couldn't live there all the time though because I love the countryside too much.

London is Britain, the only part of it that is solvent anyway.

Miss is it terriblly even if I can't afford to keep a cat there (my flat there has no room for a cat), hence I live in Birmingham

The fun part is, according to my FB news feed, the Torygraph was also covering the same story, but lo and behold, when I clicked on the link, the story had been pulled, and I got a 404 Error. The original URL was this:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politic ... debts.html

Try visiting that link now and you'll find the Torygraph pulled the story.

The Independent, on the other hand, still has the story running here.

He "lived on the breadline" once you know - he and his wife had to temporarily move into her family's castle and everything.

Of course, he no longer has to live on the "breadline", now that he's living rent free in a £2 million mansion ...
