As I said, I purposefully haven't followed D3's development because I love D1 and 2 so much, I didn't want to be hyped. Seeing some posts on this thread regarding gameplay vids looking meh - I just watched a series of Let's Play D3 vids, and it looks fookin great! Just like D2 but with split levels, lots of light stuff going on, and some clean animations.

What is it that turned you guys off?

In an attempt to keep my question from being buried I'm going to push envelope on repost spam.

Anyone have any thoughts on D3 crafting? In particular regarding my question here...
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/games-f96/diablo-3-t30916-40.html#p1318911

Is it worth it to craft when you can get rare items from the AH? I've started training up my crafting and it just seems I'm just dumping money into it and not seeing anything close to the quality of items I could have bought on the AH for a fraction of the investment.

Am I missing something? Does crafting get better?

EDIT:

The vibe I'm getting from other players is crafting is best left for endgame rather than trying to keep up while leveling.

Ending and endgame are two different concepts :) Endgame is not the end of the game, but the last phase of the game, whether it ends or not.

Some other players are saying that if you attempt to craft early on, you basically drain your gold and end up with sub par equipment, when for less gold you can buy rare equipment catered to your class and play strategy.

They are saying, it isn't until all the quests are done and you have reached the highest levels does crafting really start to pay off. I'm just wondering if anyone else who has advanced up their crafting can verify this. I would hate to dump all of my gold and end up with crappy armor for the remainder of the game.

I have almost a complete set of rare items from the auction house, whereas salvaging seems to be a waste of magic items that would normally fetch a decent amount of money but instead go for stuff that I am pretty much looting anyhow.

Any ideas? Am I missing something about crafting?

Buying gear from the AH is lame in my book, where's all the fun in that?
Diablo is all about grinding and looting, hunting better items in game whilst the various difficulty levels keep it a challenge.
I'm only playing softcore -thankfully- as my Wizard is dying quite a lot in Nightmare mode and it's only the 2nd difficulty.
Best game ever :D

Well I guess using the AH or not using it is kind of like setting a handicap or not. I'm loving the game as well (when the servers happen to be up). I'm particularly loving that Wizard's laser beam of ice. IMMA CHARGIN' MA LAZER!! SHOOP DA WHOOP!!!

I don't get the fuss, it's an ok game I guess.

Didn't play diablo 2 until a few years ago when I heard some mates raving about it. Didn't think much of that either. Oh well, I'll play on till I get bored now I've bought it.

They key to the longevity of the game is Hell difficulty and Magic Find. I don't know how it compares to D3, but I expect the game gets a lot harder on higher difficulties.

DIablo 2 had an awesome story, also remember the game is rather old.

Sure it's kinda hard for Diablo II to stay alive without having been there when it first started or around early days. Yes Item drops/Finds etc... Trying to figure out the right Horadric cube combinations for uber gear, getting the right drops, specing your character.

While the mechanics are all dead set Familiar and button abusing these days that game was very much the thin edge of the wedge of much of it's features. And the twist ending was also rather first of it's kind.

Plus I still hear the voice of Decard Cain and I haven't played Diablo in years. It was a bitching Co-op as well. Would break it out occasionally to play with my brother...

I think the Corpse walk was also rather first of it's kind. You died? well your kit is on your dead body over there... Fuck...
It was a lot of firsts for me.

Well, I caved and bought it... but it's been installing for an hour already and still only on 53%. Time's up - gotta go out... hope the install will continue from where I turn it off.

I just feel they dumbed down the game too much. Heck, you really can't even mess up your character build anymore.

Turn on 'elective mode' in gameplay options when in game - not main menu!

You know you can play mid install right?

The installer will prioritize game components as needed while you play. The only downside is that cut scenes can buffer like mad, but you can always go back and watch them again from the main menu.
