I had 2 before I cleared act I the first time.

Haven't had any more since though.

Just realised this evening how true the auction house comments earlier in the thread are. Buying a level 17 rare weapon on the AH, with a flawless square ruby to put in it is less than 15k gold I notice and would increase the DPS of a char that level by around 200-300%. Quite insane how important it is to get a decent weapon with a socket if you want to do anywhere near your damage potential.

I bought 2 weapons with an empty slot plus 50 Dex / 40 Vit on each for my monk... only 2000 gold each! Ok, I still don't have perfect rubies, but these weapons should last for a while yet.

Tried out the other classes now, witch doctor is cracking me up I have to say, there's something curiously appealing about the sense of fashion and using frogs as your principle weapon.

Been watching my mother play it on her comp. I enjoyed the battle with Diablo. Someone in her party mentioned "what a cutie Diablo has become!" which had me burst out laughing. I commented that the person who said that must be female.

I am so hooked.

I really did not think it would be this much fun to run around and get killed so often...

Mojo, my Witch Doctor, died! :(

Bloody 1 hit slammed by Duriel.

I think a tad more vitality is in order: I've got just over 2k life, so it looks like 3k might be necessary for a more guaranteed survival through normal and up to about half way through nightmare. I'm guessing that in inferno difficulty, dying is just a fact of life for casters who make a mistake.

This is my MF character - the problem is I have so much stuff now I'll never be able to bank it all. I need to give some stuff away to you guys!

Fallible wrote:Thanks for the tips, peeps. All very handy. I do know about mass slowing abilities and AoE and the like, having a level 85 frost mage on WoW, but for some reason I find it hard to transfer over what I know to this game. Because I've played WoW for so long I'm finding the abilities allocation a bit of a chore, the rune thing is also a bit wha?? but this is very much me and not the game. I'll get there in time. Might try another class as well, seems like a monk might be fun.

Might be a bit late here, but can I suggest otherwise?

I've got my Monk up to Nightmare, and I can see a big problem on the horizon. At present, the Monk is a melee fighter with a ranged/magic class's defensive capabilities - basically, the Monk specialises in dodging, which is DEX, and high attack power, which is also DEX - to get the needed DEX, attack speed, armour, +life mods etc, you're going to be struggling to get enough HP or resists. If you proceed through the difficulty levels, i think the Monk is going to have the toughest time in Hell and Inferno - at present, i think Inferno will be nearly unmanageable without having a permanent friend around to tank for you.

I am not sure how the Barb pans out yet as mine are all in Normal. However, I expect it to be a lot more capable of taking damage, and therefore much less likely you'll keep experiencing the death screen! :)

From what I read on the forums (cheating I know), monk is an absolute beast in the high difficulties due to enormous amounts of self healing and the 30% damage reduction monks/barbs get over the ranged classes.

ETA: Apparently this state of affairs won't last:

(also 3 failed attempts at spelling "enormous")

Oh my fucking god, how did I miss elective mode?

http://uk.ign.com/wikis/diablo-3/Elective_Mode

If any of you are nublets like me, this means you can freely choose multiple skills from the same set, e.g. 2, 3 or 4 defensive skills.

It's the bugged self-healing that has already been fixed that made Monks cakewalk Inferno - just that one skill. Also, I know it's much of a muchness, but I think the 30% damage is actually a penalty on the other 3 classes rather than being a buff on the melee classes. Naturally, the plan with the ranged classes is to be hit considerably less than 30% of the amount of time melee classes get hit.

I have never understood this type of thinking, although it's obviously widespread with the way Diablo 2 went. The main draw of these games is the possibility of finding rare items from monster drops right? So why deprive yourself of that fun by simply buying the items? I'm surprised (not the right word) there's an AH at all really.

Friend: "Hey, checkout this awesome unique I've got."
Me: "Sweet, where'd you find it?"
Friend: "I bought it."
Me: "Oh...I hope you didn't spend real money on that."
Friend: "..."

I'd guess trade is sister of loot. The point is not only to loot but to equip own toon to ones liking and with AH it is easier. Paying real money for virtual stuff might feel odd, but it is something everyone in gaming industry should get used to. One of the main draws is finding rares and another one using rares to hack and slash mobs essentially getting more rares and level up. Even bragging rights are worth something.

Anyway .. I am downloading the game as I write this, thanks to this thread .. /me shakes fist! .. as I've never played Diablo before. Monk or Wizard? Is it possible to reach max lvl on first playthrough?
